DO I NEED AN ARCHITECT?
According to law in the United States, you may or may not need an Architect depending on the scope of your project. Each individual state regulates when, or if, you need a licensed Architect for both residential and commercial construction. Consult your local licensing board for more information on whether or not you're required to use an Architect. Some states offer alternate pathways to permitting & construction though the use of licensed Engineers, General Contractors, or, sometime none of the above.
SHOULD I USE AN ARCHITECT?
Whether your State requires it or not - the answer is the same. Yes, you should hire an Architect. Whether you're intimately familiar with Construction or you know nothing at all - an Architect can add significant value to your project by helping you organize your goals, identify opportunities and avoid common mistakes.
